Albéa (previously Alcan Packaging Beauty) has announced its acquisition of laminate tube manufacturer Betts Group, to become a leader in plastic and laminate tubes.
UK–headquartered Betts Group focuses on laminate tubes for the oral care and personal care sector with plants in the UK, Poland, Mexico, India and Indonesia.
According to Albéa, with the purchase of Betts it becomes the global leader in plastic and laminate tubes.
“We are already a world leader in plastic tubes, and before the acquisition had a fairly good leadership in laminates, especially in the US,” explained spokesperson for Albéa Dalila Safir.
“However, with the acquisition of Betts this reinforces the position in laminates and makes us the global leader in both,” she told CosmeticsDesign–Europe.com.
Expanding in emerging markets
In addition to strengthening its tube business, Albéa has also said the acquisition will give it a stronger position in the emerging markets, particularly India, and will help it to develop its business in the new markets.
“We didn’t have a presence in India before we acquired Betts, although we are present in Asia, Brazil and Eastern Europe. India is a very promising market for cosmetics and oral care so this complements very well our footprint,” Safir explained.
Following the integration of the company, Albéa will have 31 plants in 31 countries.
Although no financial details of the transaction were disclosed, Betts claim to have sales in the region of ?100m (€116m) per year.
The company changed its name to Albéa (from Alcan) following its acquisition by Sun European Partners, which is an affiliate of the private equity firm Sun Capital Partners.
Betts Group was also acquired by Sun Capital Partners in June of last year, but Safir explained the two acquisitions are separate.
“Albéa remains in Sun European Partners portfolio and we are now purchasing Betts and integrating it into our company,” she said.
